How To Manage Your Construction Waste

Managing waste successfully means reducing unnecessary waste, reusing materials where possible and recycling anything leftover. This reduces costs and helps the environment.

Useful Resources

Waste Resource Action Programme (WRAP):
Halving Waste to Landfill Construction Waste Commitment

WRAP is working with the construction sector throughout the supply chain to halve the amount of waste sent to landfill by 2012. Through its website, WRAP is providing a wide range of resources to allow those involved with the construction industry from design through to procurement to work towards this key target for both economic and environmental benefit.

Information, tools and resources to help reduce, reuse and recycle construction waste is available from WRAP's website.

The SMARTWasteTM System
The Building Research Establishment (BRE) have developed the SMARTWaste (Site Methodology to Audit, Reduce and Target Waste) system for a step-by-step evaluation of waste and its generation.

SMARTWaste is a web-based selection of integrated tools that can be applied to any waste generating activity, and has already been adapted and used for the construction, demolition, refurbishment, manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries.

The system has four core tools which are SMARTStart (simple overview), SMARTAudit (detailed audit), SMARTStart+ (performance measurement) and BREMAPTM (resource exchange).

SEDA Details for Deconstruction Guide
The guide is divided into six chapters;
  • Chapters One to Five examine the context and principles of designing for deconstruction.
  • Chapter six consists of five typical construction details together with alternatives which optimise the potential for each detail to exploit deconstruction and waste reduction techniques, along with explanations and costs.
  • The guide is available by clicking here.
Forth Valley Site Waste Management
The Waste Strategy Area of Forth Valley have devised guidance for site waste management on construction sites. The guide covers areas such as Training and Awareness, Waste Segregation and Legal Aspects.

The council have also developed a supplementary development advice note to help builders and developers to meet legal requirements. To view the advice note, click here.
